If the IV bag is laying lower than the IV in the persons arm blood will back up the tubing and can potentially get into the IV bag. When the IV bag is hung up on an IV pole the bag is higher than the IV in the patients arm and the saline from the bag runs down into the patients arm. Hope this answers your question. Bridget

8. Keep all blood and IV tubing for further testing by the blood bank for verification of blood product and patient identification. All blood products and IV tubing are investigated by the transfusion services and reported to Canadian Blood Services and Public Health Agency of Canada.
